So I have installed Firefox 3.0 on my system and I really like some of the new features. Lets first start by going over the install process.
First of all for those of you who already have Firefox 2.0 install on your system you want to remove it or rename the directory it is installed in.
For MAC users just go to the Finder select applications and look for firefox, and click on it once so it is highlighted and hit Enter. now just go to the end of the name FireFox and add ” 2.0″
Since I do not have windows access right now, here is the quick way of uninstalling Firefox from windows.
For windows users just go to Start->Control Panel-> Add Remove Application
Select Firefox 2.0 and uninstall it
Now that we have dealt with the old install of Firefox, we are free to now download and install the new version.
The best way to do this is to go to www.spreadfirefox.com and on the page, you will see a big button for Download Fire fox. Click on it and it will bring you to a new page that will show you what your about to download,
For me, it say I am going to download FireFox 3.0 for OS X 10.4 and above. This is good since I have OS X 10.5.
If you want to double check if this will be compatible with your system you can do the following.
For Mac Users you can go to the Apple Icon in the upper left hand corner or your screen and click on About this mac, and you will see what version of MAC OS X,
For Windows users, go to Start -> Control Panel -> System and on the first screen it will list Windows XP (Or Vista) and at what service pack your on.
Now that we know for sure we are compatible with the newest version of firefox. We can click on
It will bring us to the download instructions and pop up a download window and start downloading the new Application.
We are just going to follow these instructions, Once the file is downloaded if your using firefox, it will give you the option to Open the downloaded file
The Mac will prompt you and ask if you want to run this application from the internet. Since we know the source of the file is from a repupital site go ahead and say yes. If you downloaded Firefox from a different site, you might not want to run it but that is up to you.
Now we will be prompted for the EULA “End User License Agreement” if you want to run firefox 3.0 you have to accept it, I would recommend that you read over it, especially if your doing this at your job or business
Ok once you clear though that, you will get the standard Mac Install screen, start by clicking on the FireFox Icon and dragging it to the application folder. If you had firefox install ready and did not do the rename as we did above it will tell you it can not install. Go back to the beginning of this process and follow those steps, or if you know what your doing just remove it or install it to a different location.
Now you will see the install progress bar once it is done you have installed firefox. You can continue with the instructions by adding it to your DOCK. You might want to remove the old icon from your DOCK before you do this step
Ok Now that we have firefox installed and our environment set up the way we like you. Lets go start up the application and look at some of the new features.
Upon opening firefox, you will see that it looks much like other Mac Applications, for windows, it will have a closer look to a Windows application and the same goes for Linux
Ok lets go over the list of the top new features and enhancements.
Password Manager, this was improved over the last version, now it is no longer a pop up, it displays like the plugin or popup blocker does. Also this has been enhanced buy allowing you to continue to the next page before you decide if you want the password remembered. Why is this good, lets say you forgot your password and you need to try it out. Now you can keep going until you find the right one and then say remember after you have seen that you gotten in to your website.
Improved Performance, The Firefox group have fixed many of the memory leaks in firefox as well as increasing the speed in which firefox works
Smart Location Bar, In the old version when you type in the address bar, it would try to auto compete the URL for you by using your history, but this only worked if you started from the very beginning of the url. IE http://www.google.com. 3.0 now lets you start anywhere in the url, say ggle and it will pull up any URL with GGLE in it.
And Finally a better Zoom Feature, In firefox 2.0 when you Zoomed in on a page, not everything would get zoomed in on, they have fix this and now it works really nice. Here is what you can do,
by hitting command minus you can zoom out
and by hitting command plus you can zoom in
