Episode 8 - Firefox 3.0

June 26th, 2008

So I have installed Firefox 3.0 on my system and I really like some of the new features. Lets first start by going over the install process.

First of all for those of you who already have Firefox 2.0 install on your system you want to remove it or rename the directory it is installed in.

For MAC users just go to the Finder select applications and look for firefox, and click on it once so it is highlighted and hit Enter. now just go to the end of the name FireFox and add ” 2.0″

Since I do not have windows access right now, here is the quick way of uninstalling Firefox from windows.

For windows users just go to Start->Control Panel-> Add Remove Application
Select Firefox 2.0 and uninstall it

Now that we have dealt with the old install of Firefox, we are free to now download and install the new version.

The best way to do this is to go to www.spreadfirefox.com and on the page, you will see a big button for Download Fire fox. Click on it and it will bring you to a new page that will show you what your about to download,

For me, it say I am going to download FireFox 3.0 for OS X 10.4 and above. This is good since I have OS X 10.5.

If you want to double check if this will be compatible with your system you can do the following.

For Mac Users you can go to the Apple Icon in the upper left hand corner or your screen and click on About this mac, and you will see what version of MAC OS X,

For Windows users, go to Start -> Control Panel -> System and on the first screen it will list Windows XP (Or Vista) and at what service pack your on.

Now that we know for sure we are compatible with the newest version of firefox. We can click on

It will bring us to the download instructions and pop up a download window and start downloading the new Application.

We are just going to follow these instructions,  Once the file is downloaded if your using firefox, it will give you the option to Open the downloaded file

The Mac will prompt you and ask if you want to run this application from the internet. Since we know the source of the file is from a repupital site   go ahead and say yes. If you downloaded Firefox from a different site, you might not want to run it but that is up to you.

Now we will be prompted for the EULA “End User License Agreement” if you want to run firefox 3.0 you have to accept it, I would recommend that you read over it, especially if your doing this at your job or business

Ok once you clear though that, you will get the standard Mac Install screen, start by clicking on the FireFox Icon and dragging it to the application folder. If you had firefox install ready and did not do the rename as we did above it will tell you it can not install. Go back to the beginning of this process and follow those steps, or if you know what your doing just remove it or install it to a different location.

Now you will see the install progress bar once it is done you have installed firefox. You can continue with the instructions by adding it to your DOCK. You might want to remove the old icon from your DOCK before you do this step

Ok Now that we have firefox installed and our environment set up the way we like you. Lets go start up the application and look at some of the new features.

Upon opening firefox, you will see that it looks much like other Mac Applications, for windows, it will have a closer look to a Windows application and the same goes for Linux

Ok lets go over the list of the top new features and enhancements.

Password Manager, this was improved over the last version, now it is no longer a pop up, it displays like the plugin or popup blocker does. Also this has been enhanced buy allowing you to continue to the next page before you decide if you want the password remembered. Why is this good, lets say you forgot your password and you need to try it out. Now you can keep going until you find the right one and then say remember after you have seen that you gotten in to your website.

Improved Performance, The Firefox group have fixed many of the memory leaks in firefox as well as increasing the speed in which firefox works

Smart Location Bar,  In the old version when you type in the address bar, it would try to auto compete the URL for you by using your history, but this only worked if you started from the very beginning of the url. IE http://www.google.com. 3.0 now lets you start anywhere in the url, say ggle  and it will pull up any URL with GGLE in it.

And Finally a better Zoom Feature, In firefox 2.0 when you Zoomed in on a page, not everything would get zoomed in on, they have fix this and now it works really nice. Here is what you can do,

by hitting command minus you can zoom out

and by hitting command plus you can zoom in

Jott.com and GrandCentral Site Review

May 4th, 2008

So today we reviewed 2 service that I found out about.

One is call Jott, and the other is Grand Central .  Both of these sites deal with your cell phone, and actually makes daily life a bit simpler by allowing you to do more with less effort.

Jott, is a new Voice to Text Service where you register your cell phone and now if you want to Jott down a quick e-mail to someone or set up a reminder for your self to do something, you just dial up their toll free number and just say who you want to send the Message to (This needs to be predefined) , and then record a message. After you hang up, Jott then converts that information and sends it as an E-mail or text message to your contact. Incase the service has problems transcribing the message, they also send a link to the actual voice mail. So if your driving down the road in the middle of the night and you notice your car is acting funny, you can just call Jott and send an e-mail to your secretary to call the garage and make you an appointment. Some of the other benifits to the services is that they already have links to other “blogging sites” like wordpress, twitter and about 20 other services. This is so you can quickly send updates. Now Jott is good for sending that quick e-mail or setting up a reminder, so if your constantly texting people you should look in to this site.

Now lets look at how you manage multiple phones and making it simpler for people to get in touch with you, while avoiding those anoying phone calls. There is a site call Grand Central , this site is owned by Google. Some of the features they offer, is call routing, Call Screening, call blocking , voice mail forwarding and call switching. SO lets say you have a work number, work cell phone, home number, home cell and a vacation house, and a car phone Well for someone to get in touch with you about anything you would have to give them all of those phone numbers and you have no control on who is calling you. Like your boss might eventually learn that if he wants to talk to you about anything, he should just call you personal number cause you always answer it regardless of time or day. Grand Central can help you out with the routing feature, by setting it up so that if your boss or anyone from work calls it only goes to your work number and after 6pm it just goes right to voice mail. You can set up the call routing feature for many different combinations so your boss gets one profile while, your ex-girlfriend who is still calling gets routed to the voice mail box and your mom rings you everywhere. The next cool feature is Call Switching, lets say you need to be on a conference call at 8am that last for 2 hours well you might start off at home on your home line, while drinking a cup of coffee, during the call your boss states you need to see him right after the meeting to set up something. Well you just hit the number 4 and your cell phone rings, and your now switch over to your cell phone, when you get in to your car, hit 4 again and your Car phone will right,  and finally as you get to the office, you can do the switch once more and your work number rings. Now your in the office never having to excuse your self while you hang up and switch phones, and this process is all done without anyone knowing. One other nice feature is for those e-bay people, GrandCentral has a service where you can put up a button on your website and have people call you, with out ever giving out your phone number. I think that this is a really cool feature. As it lets you conduct important business of selling that futon while making sure no marketing person gets your phone number Finally, one last great feature is that all your friends, family, and collegues only have to remember one phone number for anything. So if you get a new phone you can just update your Grand Central Profile and now everyone will call your new number and they do not change anything.

I highly recommend you checking out these website
